The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) came into being on June 1, 1971.However, it had its genesis from establish-ment of an Agricultural School at Saidapet, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, as early as 1868 and it was later relocated at Coimbatore. In 1920 it was affiliated to Madras University. TNAU assumed full responsibilities of Agricultural Education and Research and supported the State Agricultural Department by delivering research products.

The Agricultural University is regarded as one of the best institution amongst all the agricultural universities present in the whole of Asia. Situated just 5 kilometers away from the Coimbatore Railway Station the Agricultural University has been a place of interest for all the tourists who visit Coimbatore. The main attraction in the Agricultural University is the Botanical Garden which is located towards the west of the city center. The Botanical Garden is spread over an area of 300 hectares and consists of a wide range of plants and trees species.
